Programme Highlight

Talent management is a challenge to rapid changing banking environment.   Working experience is not a sufficient factor to stay at the forefront of the competition edge.  An innovative mind to practically apply all the new ideas into banking services so to create unique customer services is required.  Mr Cheng will discuss the new IT development trend in the banking industry and why all-rounded talents possessing contemporary technology sensitivity, desired business operations from customer perspective and mature soft skills are needed. This seminar provides a platform for experience sharing between young members and a successful CIO.

Mr Cheng is currently the Chief Technology and Services Officer Hong Kong at HSBC. Raymond has extensive experience in implementing different IT projects and managing sizable IT organizations to support the Bank’s businesses and operations such as process centralization, operations off-shoring, intelligent front-end systems and Internet services.

The design of Interaction Series Seminars aims to facilitate young engineers to have interactive dialogues with senior IT professionals to share their successful stories and the views on latest development in IT industries. In the first seminar of the interaction series, Mr. Raymond Cheng, the Chief Technology and Services Officer Hong Kong at Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, was invited to share his experience and success at HKIE Headquarter on 8 October 2010. This seminar was organized by IT Division jointly with YMC, AMC and CityU Computer Science Alumni Association. Over 50 peoples attended this seminar.

 

After a warm welcome by the Chairman of IT Division - Ir. Dr. L. F. Kwok, Mr. Raymond Cheng briefly introduced his duties as a Chief Information Officer (CIO) in the bank. Mr. Cheng then discussed the latest development on key IT strategies in banking business focusing on global operations, services excellence, worldwide data center management, quality service delivery, business transformation, as well as talent management. Mr. Cheng further illustrated the application of Information Technology in management information transformation and elaborated on how an operational data-driven monitoring system was developed to enable high transparency and traceability of IT operational problems with end-to-end monitoring and problem detection features at all levels. Mr. Cheng gave an example on how an IT monitoring system using simple visual features to present the healthiness of IT operation systems. He also described how the IT monitoring system might administer the trends for end-to-end business transactions and how the system might continuously monitor the Key Performance Index (KPI) to assist top management benchmarking the business performance. Mr. Cheng stressed that the innovative business-centric service management model helped to monitor up to the minutes operations of the critical business activities with indication on severity of the impact to other activities of the business.

In interactive discussion session, many questions have been asked on how a CIO handles the challenges from various parties, for example, the problems of high costing of IT system, the problems of slow service delivery, the problems of high resource usage, the impact on the data privacy in worldwide disaster recovery setup, etc. These interactive discussions aroused the attendees’ interest on the IT industries development in future.

Finally, Ir. Dr. Kwok expressed sincere thanks to Mr. Cheng for his brilliant presentation and the fruitful discussions with the attendees. On behalf of representatives from organizing committee, Ir. Dr. Kwok presented a souvenir and gave a vote of thanks to Mr. Cheng. A group photo of Mr. Cheng and the organizing committee was taken at the end of the seminar.
