ReportTechnical seminars and visits on Mobile TV Trial by TVB
By Mr Martin SIU
On 10 April 2010, the technical visit to TVB on mobile TV trial was jointly organized by AMC with EN and IT Divisions with 30 participants attended.
Firstly Mr Yuen Man briefed about Test Report and Review on the TVB Trial on the mobile TV in Hong Kong. The difficulty of deploying mobile TV in Hong Kong is the high density of high-rise building in urban area. TVB initiated mobile TV trial on DVB-H, MediaFLO and CMMB. First, the target service area of DVB-H is transmitted from Temple Hill Station with 1 kW ERP providing attractive field strength along the dense urban area. Survey data was recorded. Second, the best result is derived by transmitters Temple Hill cum two roof-top stations in Quarry Bay providing a good level of outdoor coverage. Third, CMMB trial was carried out at Temple Hill and SFN repeaters. QPSK was better than 16QAM method at outdoors than indoors environment. It is concluded that CMMB technology demonstrated its capability providing mobile TV in Hong Kong environment.
Then Mr K L Yeung gave a brief introduction of DTTB Development in Hong Kong and Development of HDTV Production in TVB. Under the license requirements set forth by HKSAR, TVB & ATV launched Digital Terrestrial TV Broadcasting (DTTB) on end of 2007 and Simulcast of existing free-to-air analog TV channels in DTTB both for TVB and ATV channels granting them each an extra frequency band to provide additional free-to-air Digital TV services
