(差之毫厘,斷送千里: 光纖技術漫談)
Jointly organized with ITD, END, AMC & CAD
Date, time & venue
19 March 2010 (Fri), 18:30-19:30, HKIE
Programme highlights
Professor Charles Kao wins the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his “groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication.” What exactly are Prof. Kao’s groundbreaking achievements? What is the principle of light transmission in an optical fiber? What factors determine the signal-carrying capacity of an optical fiber? How is it possible that an optical fiber link can transmit millions of telephone channels over a distance of thousands of kilometers? In what way is optical fiber communication changing our way of living? What are the recent developments in optical fibers? The speaker will provide answers to these questions in simple language.
