Technical Seminar: Integrated Safety Solution for Safety Engineering
Jointly organized with CAD, SSC, ITD, AMC and HKARMS
Date, time & venue
19 Jan 2010, 18:30-20:00, HKIE Seminar Room
Programme highlights
The causes of safety hazards, the technical measures, their prevention are differentiate between different types of safety. In order to achieve the functional safety of a machine or plant, the safety-relevant parts of the protection or control devices must be functioning in safe mode. This requires special measures and techniques that comply with the specifications of the relevant standards ie IEC 61508: "Safety Integrity Level" ; EN 954: "Categories" ; DIN V 19250 and DIN V VDE 0801: "Requirement categories". The seminar will include:
l Introduction of Safety Concept and Safety Standards
l How to realize the safety in Project
l Safety Engineering, Maintenance and Easy Diagnostics

Report
The seminar titled “Integrated Safety Solution for Safety Engineering” was jointly organized by the ITD, END, AMC and YMC Divisions on 19 January 2010. Speakers from the Siemens Limited were invited, namely Mr. Edwin Kong and Ms. Li Jai. Mr. Kong is the Business Development Manger of the Siemens Limited, while Ms. Li is the Safety Product Manger with lots of experience in process automation, process safety and safety integrated solution in the China and Hong Kong.
The seminar began with the introduction of some safety concepts such as hazards, functional safety, failsafe, and risk evaluation. International safety standards for classifying risk levels such as EN 62061 for functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable controls of machines and EN ISO 13849-1 for safety related parts of control systems were introduced. Other standards and related certifications include IEC 61508, EN 954, NFPA 79 and NFPA 85, etc. Certified Safety Products comprising of one controller, one engineering tool and one bus were ,mentioned. Based on the Safety Products, Integrated Safety Solutions were formulated and widely applied in different machines such as cold rolling system, cable car, press machine, etc.
With the help of those safety products and solutions, faults can be rapidly targeted and rectified. For example, a graphical, plant-wide overview with detailed information about the fault would be displayed in different statuses once faults had been automatically detected by the safety products. Moreover, safety products could be incorporated with mobile operating and monitoring device via WLAN (Wireless Ethernet) with a user-friendly web interface allowing support team to access to diagnostic data globally for rapid troubleshooting and providing emergency stop and acknowledgement functions. Finally, the speaker shared the concepts for configurations of the safety systems such as the SIMATIC Safety Integrated, the Fail-safe, modular and software controller, the S7 Distributed Safety systems, etc.
The seminar ended with a questions and answers (Q&A) session, where the audience expressed their interests in the safety product prototype which was demonstrated by the speakers.
